significant challenges that exists in deep-waters oil and gas
exploitation and production industry is the numerical modeling of
the mechanical behaviour of oil-production risers. In this
doctoral thesis, a computational tool to calculate the structural
dynamic response of a flexible catenary riser under the influence
of an internal slug flow is presented. The computational tool is
called SLUGFLEX and it consists of two computational codes: the
code that calculates the dynamic structural response of risers,
and the code that calculates the development of an internal slug
flow within risers. The slug flow, whose main feature is the
intermittency of two different regions: a liquid slug and an
elongated bubble of gas, is mathematically modeled through the use
of an unidimensional lagrangian slug tracking method, that divides
the computational domain of slug flow in unit cells, which are
made up by a liquid slug and an elongated bubble of gas. To carry
out the structural analysis, the riser, object of this study, is
discretized through the use of spatial Euler beam finite elements,
which experiments large displacements and large rotations, but
with small deformations. For the tridimensional formulation of the
beam element, the co-rotational formulation is used. The
fluid-structure interaction is a very complex phenomenon, this due
to the influence of the internal fluid dynamics in the riser
dynamic response and the influence of riser dynamic response in
the internal fluid development; for this reason, both
computational codes work together exchanging information during
the whole calculation process. In the calculus of the risers
dynamic response, the direct integration method HHT-alpha is used,
in combination witht the Newton-Raphson method for follower loads,
which is used on purpose of obtaining the equilibrium between the
internal forces and the external forces at each instant of time.
Riser simulations with imposed oscillation movements at the top
were also considered. The numerical results obtained by the
computational tool are validated through the comparison with the
experimental results found in the current literature.",
